A farmtrack marking the course of the main runway at RAF Matching Green in Essex on a May evening. Built by the US Army in 1943, it was allocated to the 391st Bombardment Group of the 9th USAAF, flying Martin B26 Marauders. The airfield was closed in 1946, and the concrete was lifted in the 1960s. Traces of the runways and perimeter tracks survive, as does the control tower and various buildings on the former officer's and sick quarters sites. In dry weather the ghostly outlines of the old runways can clearly be seen.
Thank you so much Heather. Strangely, it was one of the few photos that I have taken that I actually quite liked in colour too! The colours were very muted, and the sky looked like china. The B&W has far more atmosphere though..
